5 LESSONS I LEARNED FROM THE FIRST ROAD TRIP

I've been to many under-7-hour road trips but last week was the first time I went to a long drive trip from Los Angeles, California to Portland, Oregon. It's such an amazing trip that I became quickly a fan of road trip travel. I love the different beauty on the road and funny stories shared among companions. To prepare for the trip, I read so many tips and tricks around Internet but through out the five days, I learned myself five lessons to make road trip more perfect and fulfilled. If you have any tip, please let me know in the comment section, I'd love to know.
1. Make a loose plan
We planned to go from point A to point B in 11 hours but turn out we actually was on the road for 15 hours plus the time of checking in the hotel. There are so many delays we should have thought about like crazy traffic during July 4th, restroom time every 2 hours, local restaurant having a long customer line, etc. Those kind of unexpected events can added up and make a huge impact on the schedule. My advice is not to ambitious in mileage and be realistic with timing.
Every night is in different hotel
2. Never try a new skincare
I learned this lesson in the hard way. To be an efficient packer, I only packed skin care and makeup I needed for a few days. That's why I opted for new skincare samples (use it and threw it away). Then I realize that's not ideal. My skin react both to the change in weather and new products. I ended up with a little break out on my cheek.
3. Bring a GPS
If you can only take away one tip from this post, please remember to pack a GPS. All of us have smartphones which sometimes didn't work or worked slowly due to a lack of signals. Luckily, my sister in-law brought her GPS that was a huge help. Also, using GPS can save you battery which will be used for a lot of fun things rather than being....a map. If you have no idea where you put your GPS, go check your storage like I just did.
4. Plan attractions to visit in advance
The obvious pro of road trip is you can visit beautiful spots by the road. We originally planned to visit the Red National and State Park at around 4pm. However, we failed in time management (see lesson 1), we passed by the place very late afternoon and couldn't see anything. My learned lesson is we should put the places we wanted to visit in a flexible schedule so unforeseen events would impact as little as possible. For example, plan to visit point A around the time frame of 2-5pm instead of the sharp time of 4pm.
5. Pack water and snack
Snack and non-alcohol drinks are fun parts of a road trip we couldn't miss. We packed variety of food and drinks but when we run low in water, I realized that not every rest area has a vending machine. The only place carrying water is truck stops where they have fast food and gas stations. Of course, we had to pay triple price for a water bottle. That's definitely not my intention to splurge ... on water.
Thank you for reading and hope you have a great trip!

  11. Great tips! You are right about samples. I always do that too but then I see it can go a wrong way. Excellent point about bringing GPS to the trip! I always rely on google maps but if no reception, then what would I do? Buy paper maps from a gas station? 😳 xo Zuma www.splashofteal.com

  15. I agree with #2 a lot! I do the same and pack the little samples sometimes, but only if I have actually used the same exact products before. Traveling to a new place means new climate, your skin already has to adjust to that, and being on the road is also hard on it, introducing a new regimen may not be the ideal thing. I agree 100%. Thanks for the other useful tips too!

  26. So good you are back, I have been visiting your blog for some weeks and there was no post! I had kind of a blog crash, but thankfully things are solved now! I liked the tips, especially because I love roadtrips. I think that water and snack is really important, a GPS for sure and to be realistic about timing (and lines for eating, restroom, etc) is a very good tip. Welcome back! Hope you have a great day!

  41. Personally I love road trips too, but my fiance hates them! So it sucks. I made the trip from LA to Oregon a few times as a kid with my family. Everything is so green and beautiful north of SF! So true about the skincare and make up samples. I accumulate a ton but when I'm on a trip I want to look good so I'm too scared to get too experimental with products I haven't tried before!
